Who We Are

Built From Lived Experience

Addiction and incarceration tried to write our story. Some of us have walked through all of it — the sentence, the relapse, the doors that close when people see your record. Here’s what the system doesn’t tell you: prison doesn’t end at the gate. Coming home is where the real fight starts, and nobody should fight it alone. We’re not all broken. We can be unchained.

What We Are

  • A licensed treatment program under Ascend Behavioral Health, LLC — substance use and mental health care, alongside lived experience, under one roof
  • A full team: Clinical Director-led, with licensed SUD counselors and certified peer support specialists working side by side
  • Medicaid accepted. Real treatment shouldn’t depend on the size of your wallet
  • Reentry-first and family-included. Coming home from the system? You are welcome — no explanation required
  • Every pathway respected — abstinence-based, faith-based, medication-assisted. Your recovery, your path, our team behind it

What We Are Not

  • We are not the revolving door. The outdated, check-the-box style of treatment that processes people instead of knowing them — that’s exactly what we’re here to replace
  • We are not a lecture hall. Nobody here talks down to you, because most of us have sat in your chair
  • We are not going to pretend there’s only one right way — but there are real ways, and we walk them with you
  • We are not a crisis line — in a crisis moment we get you to immediate help fast: call or text 988, or 911 in an emergency

Why we say this out loud: we’re not all broken — we can be unchained. Truth is the foundation of this community, and knowing exactly who we are is how trust starts on day one.

The Vision

This Isn’t A Program. It’s A Path.

Recovery was never supposed to be boxes checked.

Sign here. Attend that. Placeholder people running placeholder plans. We’ve lived that version — and we watched it fail people we love. So we built the replacement: licensed treatment, housing, real work, and a community that doesn’t clock out. A whole life, rebuilt in order. A door, a bed, a plan, a paycheck, a purpose.

3 a.m. is the hardest hour. Nobody should face it alone.

That’s what we’re building toward: a room that never closes. A Discord where somebody is always awake. A recovery coach in your pocket that knows your plan and your triggers, and that says call your sponsor — because it’s a bridge to people, never a substitute for them. Meditations for the nights you can’t sleep. A text on the anniversary that always knocks you sideways.

Tech carries the message — people do the healing. Everything above supports the work between humans; none of it replaces a mentor, a meeting, or professional care. We won’t put an AI between you and a clinician, ever.

Stories

Real People. Real Stories. Real Change.

“You were not created to survive. You were created to thrive.”

Every legend in this community started as someone who almost gave up. Stories live here in two forms, and we label which is which every time:

Community Voices

Anyone in recovery, from anywhere. You do not have to have come through our program to have something worth saying.

Program Stories

People who walked through these doors. Labeled as ours, because a claim about what our program does should belong to somebody who lived it here.

Told in their own words, on their own terms, either way.

Have a story that could carry someone else through their worst night? We’d be honored to hear it. Nothing is ever shared without your written permission.

Legends Unchained wasn’t created from a textbook.

Savannah & Jason Bushman · Co-Founders & Co-Owners

It was created from lived experience. Savannah and Jason Bushman know what it feels like to be defined by the worst chapters of your life. They also know what it takes to break those chains, rebuild from the ground up, and create a future that once seemed impossible.

“We see you. We never forget where we came from. And nobody walks home alone.”

Our Story

From Incarceration to Impact

Their past did not become their ending.

Both Savannah and Jason spent significant portions of their lives involved in the justice system. Between addiction, incarceration, trauma, and the consequences of their choices, there were times when the future looked very different from the life they live today.

They are not hired spokespeople and they are not reading from a script. They are proof, standing in the room, that there is a way through — and Legends Unchained is that proof given a name and a front door.

Savannah’s Story

She was thirteen the first time.

Savannah’s journey began with significant childhood trauma and instability. She spent much of her youth moving through foster homes, group homes, juvenile placements, detention, and eventually the adult criminal justice system.

She began using methamphetamine at just 13 years old. At 18, she gave birth to her first child while incarcerated. Addiction continued to control her life — eventually costing her relationships, her freedom, and the ability to be the mother she desperately wanted to be.

Her turning point came when she realized that continuing down the same path could cost her everything, including her life.

Aug 28
2011
The day she chose a different direction.
More than 15 years of continuous recovery, and counting.

Recovery required far more than simply stopping. It meant confronting trauma, changing deeply rooted patterns, accepting accountability, rebuilding relationships, learning her worth, and creating an entirely new life.

Today her experience has become her purpose. She returned to the very system she once lived inside — not as an incarcerated woman, but as someone determined to help others find a different way forward. She now teaches reentry classes to incarcerated women at the Utah State Prison, and stays actively involved in reentry, recovery, and community work.

Jason’s Story

Twenty years inside. Then he went to work.

Jason understands firsthand what it means to rebuild a life after long-term incarceration. He served approximately twenty consecutive years in prison before returning to the community and facing one of the greatest challenges of his life: learning how to build a future after decades behind the walls.

20 yrs Consecutive years served.
Then a job, then leadership, then a life built on purpose.

Instead of letting his past decide what came next, Jason went to work. He entered the workforce, proved his value through consistency and effort, and advanced into leadership. He and Savannah built a home, a family, careers, and a life centered on stability, service, accountability, and giving back.

His experience gives him a perspective that cannot be taught in a classroom. He knows the fear and uncertainty that come with starting over — and the power of having someone believe your life can become something more.

People are more than the worst thing they have ever done.

Why We Created Legends Unchained

Recovery requires accountability. It also requires opportunity.

People need clinical treatment. They need structure. They need support, healthy relationships, and real-world skills. And sometimes they need someone standing in front of them who can honestly say:

“I’ve been there. There is another life on the other side of this.”

That is why we built this.

We wanted to build the kind of program we wish more people had access to when we were struggling — a place where evidence-based behavioral health and substance use treatment could exist alongside lived experience, compassion, accountability, peer support, and genuine connection.

Our mission isn’t to rescue people. It is to give people the tools, treatment, support, and opportunity to recognize their own strength and build a life they no longer need to escape from.

Today, the lives Savannah and Jason live would have once seemed impossible. That is exactly why they believe so deeply in the people who walk through these doors.

Leadership

The People Behind The Door

Every one of them has lived some version of what you are walking through. That is not a marketing line — it is the hiring standard.

Savannah Bushman

COO · Executive Director · Co-Owner

More than 15 years in continuous recovery. Came up through foster care, juvenile placements, and the adult system, and now teaches reentry classes to incarcerated women at the Utah State Prison. She has sat on both sides of that room.

She went back in on purpose.

Jason Bushman

Co-Founder & Co-Owner

Served roughly twenty consecutive years, came home, went to work, and advanced into leadership on consistency alone. He knows exactly what the first week out feels like, and what it takes to still be standing a year later.

Proof that starting over works.
JB

Jerry Berndt, LCSW

Clinical Director

A licensed clinical social worker leading the clinical program. Every level of care here runs under his supervision, and the counselors and peer support specialists work as one team, on one plan.

He is the reason the clinical side holds to the same standard as the lived experience beside it.

Licensed care, no compromise.
AB

Amber Bride

Co-Owner

A behavioral health leader, program developer, and woman in long-term recovery. Her background spans supportive housing, peer services, community outreach, and partnership building — and she is known for turning ideas into programs that actually reach people.

She leads with authenticity, compassion, accountability, and high expectations, and she believes people deserve support without being defined by their past.

Lived experience is an asset, not a limitation.

The Why

This Is How Broken It Is

The system releases people with a bus ticket and a record, then acts surprised by what happens next. We’re not surprised. We lived the numbers. Now look at them.

600K+
people come home from U.S. prisons every year — most with no plan waiting.
62%
are rearrested within 3 years of release. The revolving door isn’t a metaphor.
40×
more likely to die of an opioid overdose in the first two weeks home than the general public.
27%
of formerly incarcerated people are unemployed — roughly five times the national rate.
–75%
The flip side: starting treatment before release and continuing it through reentry cuts the risk of death by up to 75%. Community, housing, treatment, and work change the math. That’s not hope talk — that’s the data. That’s why Legends Unchained exists.
